Teaching media literacy with recaps, not TED talks
A lesson plan for parents, clubs, and anyone tired of being shouted at by thumbnails
Minute 0–10: read, do not play
Hand someone our essay for a title—not the video. Ask them to underline one strength and one weakness. People who “don’t like reading” will still argue with a weakness. That is reading.
Then reveal the Amharic title. Ask what the title wants the body to feel before a single frame. Clickbait is a curriculum if you interrogate it.
Minute 10–25: twenty minutes of pictures
Play only if the audience section allows it. Stop once. Use the five prompts from our active-viewing guide. No second episode. Literacy is built by stopping, not by stacking.
Minute 25–40: write a because-sentence
Each person writes why they would or would not recommend the title to a cousin. Share. The point is not consensus. The point is that recommendation is a moral act.
